Wm. F. Buckley "Bucks" the GOP; other apolitical thoughts
"There are grounds for wondering whether the Republican party will survive this dilemma," he writes.
I watched George Tenet on "60 Minutes" last night. He seemed furious about having his honor impugned -- very far away from helping educate us about the March to the Iraq War. Forget about his description as an "honest man" -- any honest CIA analyst knew Rumsfeld's Army in the Middle East would result in a fireball of enmity, terrorism, and civil war.
My wife, Jessica, made an excellent point while watching Tenet. The whole premise of Rumsfeld's "light, mobile force" was to first knock down Iraq in a couple weeks, then Syria, then Iran, and whoever else the Pentagon and White House felt like "regime changing."
Imagine the scale of this hubris. Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Bush wanted to one-up Hitler himself, and create a new blitzkreig.
With leaders like that in power, it was totally assured that our country would be, pardon the French, fucked.
