The polling data shown here indicate that there's no ideological difference between Islamic extremists and moderates. Further, extremists are actually more educated and have higher incomes than moderates. And both admire the West's technology and democratic institutions.
The only significant difference the pollers found was that moderates suggested that the West increase economic ties with the Islamic world, while extremists suggest that the West refrains from "intefering and imposing its beliefs."
To me, the polling data indicates yet another nail in the coffin of GeorgeW's credibility. "They hate freedom," he said after September 11, 2001. In fact, Al-Qaida is a loose band of primarily Saudi Sunni Muslim extremists who want Westerners out of the land of Mecca and Medina (where the US protects the corrupt House of Saud with military bases in Saudi Arabia).
Iraq couldn't have less to do with any of this, and the decision to attack and occupy, and force "freedom" at the barrel of a gun, on that country will puzzle historians for centuries.
