Tucson and the Vote No on Prop. 107 Folks
I'm sitting in a restaurant in downtown Tucson, celebrating Election Night with the local campaign against Proposition 107.

The excitement is palpable, and hopes high that Arizona, unlike Virginia and a few others states that have declared themselves constitutionally homophobic.

It's great being here! Local politicos Steve Leal, Karen Uhlich, Nina Trasoff and Paula Aboud are in attendance, and we've got video messages from other heavy hitters, like Peter Likins, the former president of the University of Arizona, as well as US Rep. Raul Grijalva.

"Let's hope that this thing fails, because it's so onerous!" said former Tucson mayor Bob Walkup said.

"This is the true meaning of grassroots...we're turning things around...I think we're going to be the first state to finally say no" (to these homophobic amendments). --Nina Trasoff

My thoughts: this feels a bit like Munich, baby.

"The kinds of things we've been seeing in our country...strike deeply against principles...that are the hallmark of America justice and equality....We can never, ever, ever let them divide us all." ... "We have told them they can't drive us apart!" ... "We will continue to make an oasis for our community!" --Steve Leal

Paula Aboud: "We've never had a statewide ballot issue dealing with this issue [the GLBT issue] in Arizona in my lifetime. We've already sent a message."

Karen Uhlich: "We have allies that will not bend, and never will....This is the beginning of our togetherness."
