I'm going to be a delivery driver for BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse, a new California chain opening up in Tucson. The restaurant opens on June 7.
The management people make me anxious in a way that I can't really place, though. I suppose they're a bit stressed with the onus of opening a restaurant with a bunch of half-trained halfwits, but I've been annoyed with the jokes about "firing" people for small infractions. Today I went in to pick up my uniform, and I over-enunciated a word, and my future supervisor said, "Don't make fun of my accent." He's Hispanic, like most of the management staff except for the head guy, as white and overweight as an Iowa farmer. Anyway, I know that I'll be in my car for the majority of the time I'll be working for them, so no matter. I want to do this as a summer into semester job--I think I need to make more than about $1100 a month during the school year.
So, what can you do? I'm overqualified, oversmart, and to 95% of the population, there's only one degree of separation between me and a professor of English. In a certain sense that is true, but not really.
Anyway, they're offering a free lunch to the families of all the new employees, and the crisp, nice, new restaurant is big and kickass, closer to the Cheesecake Factory (I don't know if anyone's been there) than Old Chicago. Chic stuff. All the fixins. --ADAM
