Only a jerk could write a review like this
Andrew, I don't know if you'll read this comment, but your review is a travesty. It's the kind of sloppy, self-congratulatory writing that made me swear off reading _Slate_ about four years ago. Your review wades into Camille Paglia territory for sloppiness.
Only a jerk could watch _Inception_ and make uninformed, haphazard remarks claiming to know what dreams are all about, and what Hitchcock and Kubrick are all about, and saying that _Total Recall_ is a better movie than _Inception_. Ridiculous; you just lost all credibility in my book. Christopher Nolan is Nietzsche and you are his Duhring -- Nolan's work will be considered for decades, while your juvenile remarks will become time-capsule for all the bad tendencies of our era's push-button publishing.
_Inception_ is thoughtful, innovative, and exceeds expectations -- it is your standards that are bloated out of proportion. While Nolan is an artist working in a gigantic canvas (as Welles put it) and finding new ways to express ideas, you pan his work with sloppy writing. Shame on you.
