Poem: Tucson Sit

In Tucson they don't have many street lights
So the astronomers can see the stars
I read a bit furtively, as always, in my student mode
Then stepped on my bicycle into the dark empty street
A little to the north, a desert grotto with a temple off the road
Strangers, books, low lights
Bow, turn, bow, sit
Stand, step, head down, shuffle
Bow, turn, bow, sit
Stand, step, head down, shuffle
Not a word spoken; just another meditation
Hot mountain sky, glint of starlight
No profanes - sacred
