Peaks and valleys for the Husker Nation
Discipline. Success. Arrogance.
I can remember a time when Nebraskans congratulated themselves on tromping a Pacific squad 77-7. Then, they ran the score up on Florida in the national title game.
My how the pages have turned. Oklahoma went up 35-0 in the first quarter of tonight's game. Luckily for Nebraska, this one's only on ESPN -- not ABC. They don't get on ABC anymore.
With the demographic changes across the country, it's doubtful that Nebraska will ever reach such heights again. "Husker" meant elite from 1970-1999. Midwestern states will be siphoning off population, talent, and support for their university systems slowly over the coming decades.
Now, the Blackshirts have no shirt -- like the emperor with no clothes.
In recalling the past, I don't feel sorry for the Husker Nation. They remind me of a euphoric Republican Party circa 2003, now facing disgrace in the election of 2008. They dwell on bygone halcyon days, cursing their mistakes along the way, knowing they only have themselves to blame. That, and the hubris of Karl Rove and Steve Pederson.
