Yep, it was only a few miles from where we live -- the bridge collapse. Weird and sad. I pray for the folks affected.
I'm bracing for the cliches, bromides, and dual self-promotion of our Minnesota Governor, Tim Pawlenty, and Minnesota Republican Senator Norm Coleman.
Pawlenty has to be partially responsible for this tragedy. He has been cutting transportation/road maintenance funding for his whole tenure as Governor. He's been trying to position himself as a "national Republican" by disallowing any change in the tax code, except for tax cuts, which has resulted in increased crime and horrible road (and bridge) quality.
Traffic moves at 10 mph across the city every weekday from 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., and it sounds like traffic on the collapsed bridge was at a standstill, too.
Another example of political cowardice is the reappearance of SuperVillain Donald Rumsfeld, Mr. Arrogance.
He said in front of Congress about the way the Department of Defense dealt with the Pat Tillman case:
Yes, no one in the White House would engage in a coverup:
[Rumsfeld] denied "any evidence of a coverup" by the White House or the Pentagon.
"I know that I would not engage in a coverup," he said. "I know that no one in the White House suggested such a thing to me."
* Total lack of Iraqi WMD
* Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo Bay and torture
* Valerie Plame outed as CIA agent
* Illegal wiretapping from Oct. 2001 to the present
* Alberto Gonzalez and firing of eight federal prosecutors, some involved in corruption investigations of prominent Republicans
* White House officials illegally using Republican National Committee e-mail addresses instead of White House accounts
* Halliburton no-bid contracts
How about Rumsfeld's order to attack Al-Jazeera headquarters in Baghdad, killing a journalist?
These men are lying liars and unrepentant criminals. Rumsfeld used the death of Pat Tillman and the capture and "rescue" of Jessica Lynch to try to score cheap political points, and our fawning national media at it all up.
No coverup? How about the years of "things are going great!" in Iraq?
I'm glad the Democratic majority in Congress is forcing these jackasses to show their corrupt faces. Herbert Hoover could run as a Democrat and win in 2008 with these putrid Republicans.
