The new "we're upping the ante" speech campaign by Bush and Rumsfeld (soon Cheney, perhaps) is really scaring me. The language is really haphazard -- saying that "the enemy" wants a new totalitarian fascism, etc. etc. Comparisons of the 2/3 of Americans that are tired of the Iraq War to the "appeasers" of Hitler and Stalin. The rhetoric attempts to create a black-and-white world; enemy bad, us good. We've all seen this territory. Heck, those were happier times, back in 2003, before we realized that Bush is an emperor with no clothes.
Where the line is between fighting actual al-Qaida terrorists, and putting innocent "detainees" in Gitmo for five years for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, snooping on US citizens, and also fighting the entire Islamic world to annihilation -- I don't know where this line is. The rhetoric doesn't care about such a line. It only cares about holding on to power, winning the next election for the insane Republicans who call people racial epithets like "macaca" to their face, and say that cab drivers are terrorists. Jesus H. Christ, could we at least get the second to worst frat boys in power, instead of these, dare I say it, evildoers?
They outlawed dissent and pacifism in 1933 in Germany, you know. "Happier" times, eh, the enemy bad, us good...war without end...a way of life enforced militarily around the world on the unwilling...a leader with total resolve who couldn't admit to mistakes...a small man in power, aided by a coterie of handlers and flatterers, unable to escape his inaccurate assumptions, his distrust of reason and intellectuals....
Why O why, Lord, must this happen in the United States of America?
