First week of teaching just ended
After being moved to "adjunct" -- hate that term! -- status last quarter, it was hard to be motivated for teaching. Monday of this week didn't seem to go so well, but that helped me resolve to do my job fully. I'm doing my best to stay confident and "have some pride" in my instruction. One way is staying on top of grading and other ancillary work. And leaving enough time to commute leisurely helps me; being on time (early instead of arriving right at 7:59 a.m.) communicates to students that the course matters to me, so maybe it should matter for them. The benefit is that doing these things makes teaching feel much easier. It is kind of depressing to think of the fact that I need another part-time job, but my allegiance should be to students and not the administration. And perhaps most importantly, not everyone gets to direct discussion of literature and film (let alone take part in such discussion regularly). I think I'm doing better because it turned to spring at long last!
