Dean Dad argues that despite the fact that we are all human, some lines of questioning, which he labels of a "gotcha" nature, are off-limits. He compares bad behavior from students as not dissimilar to bad behavior from instructors toward administrators.
I personally don't recall any student of mine playing "gotcha." I don't have lines of questioning that are off-limits. People ask pointed questions about course design, the syllabus, assigned readings, and even my religious and political views. I answer them openly and honestly as well as I am able.
If anything, the lack of inquisitiveness I see from students is much more challenging than their attempts at "gotcha." What is there to be defensive about unless there is something underlying which is indefensible?
