I saw the above film last night. Its cinematography was not spectacular -- it's a low budget film. And the Toby character's "my dad is this" speeches get old, and his character never really takes on much interiority. But Felicity Huffman's character Bree is exceptional, and I think it's right that she got nominated for an Academy award for her work.
That said, many of the characters other than Bree had a wooden feel. The ironic ending, post-sex change, Toby as a successful gay porn star, redefined "family" in a way that I think is realistic.
The best shot of the film was of the blow-up dolphin floating away in a Phoenix pool. (Although it seems that the whole film was shot in LA, except for a few Kentucky tree scenes. --adam
