In an essay, a student of mine came up with a really smart idea. She writes, "After hearing this story [about a hate crime murder] I felt a deep regret for ever just laughing at someone calling me a 'chink.' Or even just telling someone it was okay to call me by that name. Many Asians were murdered with seeing that as their last word."
How many others were killed hearing their last word spoken as "fag," "kike," "nigger," "slope," and so on? It's an excellent response to the sort of, "Oh, but he's not really a racist" type of thinking.
