50-state strategy
Tags: politics
In the 2003 primary campaign in Iowa (for the 2004 election), I went door-to-door for Howard Dean; he eventually became head of the Democratic National Committee. His first initiative was the "50-state strategy": the idea that Democrats can be competitive in even the reddest states. The idea was put down as too expensive and pie-in-the-sky at the time.

With Obama competing in states like Indiana, Georgia, and Virginia, Dean has been proven sagacious.

No profanes - sacred
